Sri Lanka: A Legacy of Over 5,000 Years
With a history stretching back over five millennia, Sri Lanka stands as an inspiration of ancient civilizations and cultural splendor, with 3,000 years meticulously chronicled in historical records. The nation’s museums serve as gateways to this illustrious past, preserving and celebrating the richness of its heritage. In 1877, during British colonial rule, the Colombo National Museum was established as Sri Lanka’s first national museum by Governor William Henry Gregory. Designed in the elegant Italian architectural style, the museum became a symbol of the island's commitment to safeguarding its treasures. The journey of heritage conservation was further solidified in 1942 with the enactment of the Museum Ordinance Act No. 31, which formalized the creation of the Department of National Museums (DNM).
